Fired Geoffrey Mosiria Breaks Silence After Eastleigh Building Collapse, Alleges Corruption
Former Nairobi County official Geoffrey Mosiria has raised serious concerns about alleged corruption and failures in construction oversight following the collapse of a 14-storey building in Eastleigh, Nairobi, leaving several people trapped.
In a statement shared on social media, Mosiria questioned the state of leadership in the capital, calling for accountability and urgent measures to protect residents from unsafe buildings.
“Jameni Nairobi tulikosea Mungu wapi?” Mosiria posed, expressing concern over the incident and sending prayers to the families of those affected.
He argued that the tragedy had raised questions about City Hall’s planning and construction oversight departments, insisting that public safety should not be compromised by corruption or political interference.
Mosiria also revisited his experience while serving in the Environment Department, claiming that he faced hostility after attempting to stop what he described as illegal excavation activities.
According to him, two environment officers were suspended after intervening in excavation activities in Roysambu and South C. He further claimed that a building later collapsed in South C, killing three people.
Mosiria said he had evidence relating to the incidents and was prepared to present it through the appropriate channels.
He also alleged that some developers had raised concerns about the cost of obtaining building approvals in Nairobi, with claims of payments running into millions of shillings. He called for independent investigations into the allegations.
The former county official urged authorities to ensure that building approvals are based on professional assessments and compliance with safety regulations rather than political influence.
Mosiria appealed to President William Ruto to intervene and support efforts to strengthen accountability in Nairobi’s construction sector.
He further claimed that he had faced threats and intimidation over his concerns, saying he had recorded a statement with police and intended to provide additional information to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
The allegations have not been independently verified.
The Eastleigh building collapse has renewed attention on construction safety and the enforcement of building regulations in Nairobi, with calls for thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
