Fernando Da Cruz Reveals What Cost Kaizer Chiefs After Red Arrows Elimination
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz believes his team should have won comfortably against Red Arrows, despite Amakhosi crashing out of the CAF Confederation Cup following a penalty shootout.
The Soweto-based club dominated much of the return leg, creating several promising scoring opportunities. However, their failure to turn those chances into goals ultimately proved costly. Chiefs won the match 1-0 in regulation time, but the result left the tie level on aggregate, forcing both teams into a penalty shootout that ended Amakhosi’s continental campaign.
Speaking after the encounter, Da Cruz expressed his disappointment with the outcome, insisting that his players had done enough to secure a much bigger victory.
According to iDiski Times, the Chiefs coach said his team controlled the match and created numerous opportunities but failed to make the most of them.
Da Cruz reportedly argued that Chiefs should normally have scored three or four goals based on the chances they created, rather than finishing the match with just one goal.
His comments highlighted a major concern for Amakhosi: their lack of clinical finishing in front of goal. Although the team showed attacking intent and enjoyed periods of dominance, the players struggled to convert their opportunities when it mattered most.
That failure allowed Red Arrows to remain in the contest and eventually take the tie to penalties, where Chiefs’ hopes of progressing to the competition’s group stage came to an end.
For Da Cruz, the disappointment is particularly significant because he believes his side had enough opportunities to settle the contest during normal time.
The elimination will now force the Chiefs technical team to assess the performance and identify areas that require improvement, especially in front of goal.
Amakhosi must shift their attention back to domestic football, but the defeat serves as a painful reminder that dominating a match means little without converting chances into goals.
