Fate of Powerful GSU Officer Still Unknown 4 Months Since Losing His Top Job

Former General Service Unit (GSU) Deputy Commandant Godhard Kamau has remained out of the public eye for nearly four months after being replaced in a leadership reshuffle that saw senior changes within the Kenya Police Service.

Kamau was succeeded by Fredrick Egesa in changes effected by Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Kenya Police Service, Eliud Lagat. Since his replacement, there has been no public announcement regarding his next posting, leaving many within security circles speculating about his future.

Kamau was appointed GSU Deputy Commandant in October 2025 after years of serving in elite police formations. His promotion was viewed as recognition of his extensive operational experience and leadership within the specialized unit.

Before becoming Deputy Commandant, Kamau headed the elite Recce Squad, one of the country’s most highly trained tactical units responsible for responding to terrorism, hostage situations and other high-risk security operations. His tenure as Recce Squad commander strengthened his reputation as an experienced field officer capable of handling complex security assignments.

Earlier in his career, Kamau served as the Staffing Officer in charge of Operations at GSU Headquarters, where he was involved in planning and coordinating operational deployments across the unit.

With a career spanning key command and operational positions, observers believe Kamau’s experience makes him a valuable asset for future senior assignments within the National Police Service. However, until an official appointment is announced, his next destination remains unknown.

The uncertainty surrounding his future comes at a time when the National Police Service continues to reorganize its senior leadership, with the changes aimed at strengthening command structures across specialized units.

Whether Kamau returns to another strategic command role or is assigned new responsibilities elsewhere in the police service remains a question that only time—and official communication from the National Police Service—will answer.
