Eastleigh Building Collapse Update as 26 Missing People Are Traced, Two Injured Taken to KNH

Kenya Red Cross has confirmed that 26 people who had been reported missing following the collapse of an 18-storey building in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area have been traced and accounted for, as rescue teams continue searching the site.

Two injured people have been taken to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for treatment following the Friday, October 23, incident.

In an update shared on its official X account, Kenya Red Cross said its rescue teams were working alongside other emergency response agencies to search the affected area and establish the whereabouts of those who might have been inside the building when it collapsed.

The organisation also announced that a tracing desk had been set up at the scene to help families looking for relatives who could have been caught up in the incident.

Families seeking information about missing loved ones have been advised to contact Kenya Red Cross through its toll-free number, 1199.

The building, which was reportedly under construction, collapsed along Yusuf Haji Avenue near Day to Day Supermarket on 9th Street. Other initial reports placed the incident along 8th Street.

Emergency responders remained at the site as fears persisted that more people could be trapped beneath the debris. Kenya Red Cross urged members of the public to keep away from the affected area to give rescue teams enough space to carry out their work safely.

The cause of the collapse and the exact number of people who were inside the building at the time had not been established in the updates available.

The incident has renewed questions about building safety in Nairobi, coming less than a week after another building collapsed along Moi Avenue in the Central Business District.

The earlier incident occurred on October 17 during the planned demolition of a building that housed Club Avenida.

According to the county government, 24 workers had been reported at the site, with four sustaining injuries. Three of the injured workers were treated at Kenyatta National Hospital, while all the workers were eventually accounted for.

Authorities ordered a structural safety assessment before further work could proceed at the Moi Avenue site.

As rescue operations continue in Eastleigh, emergency teams are working to account for everyone who may have been affected by the latest collapse, while families await further information.
