Duncan Mogire: Former Kisii School Captain Building A Successful Energy Company In DRC

Duncan Mitunda Mogire is a Kenyan entrepreneur who has established himself in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where he runs Jambo Energy SARL, a petroleum distribution and logistics company serving clients across different economic sectors.

Born in 1985 in Kisii, Mogire attended primary school in Nairobi before joining Kisii School for his secondary education. He served as the school captain, an experience he credits with shaping his leadership skills.

He later graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and pursued an Executive MBA in Finance and Management at Frankfurt School of Management.

Mogire began working in the petroleum industry in 2009. His first trip to DRC came in 2015 through Dalbit Group, where he was appointed head of sales and marketing at the company’s Lubumbashi branch. His primary responsibility was developing fuel sales to mining companies in the Copper Belt region.

After gaining years of experience in the industry, he resigned from employment in 2023 to establish Jambo Energy in Kinshasa.

The business initially delivered diesel to supermarkets, residential homes and offices that relied on generators because of unreliable electricity supply. Using his savings, Mogire gradually expanded operations by building relationships with suppliers and banks.

Today, Jambo Energy employs more than 70 people and serves over 20 active customers. The company has installed storage tanks and pumps at clients’ premises, enabling it to secure exclusive fuel supply contracts. Its customers collectively have approximately 1.45 million litres of fuel storage capacity.

Beyond petroleum distribution, the company operates trucks transporting bulk fuel between Matadi port and Kinshasa. It also uses barges to transport fuel along the Congo River and fabricates storage tanks for customers.

Looking ahead, Mogire plans to expand into bulk fuel importation through Matadi, Beira and Dar es Salaam ports. By mid-2027, he intends to acquire a barge with a capacity of one million litres.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, Mogire emphasises discipline, resilience and mastering one’s chosen field, arguing that young people should prioritise understanding their businesses instead of chasing quick money.
