DR Irvin Khoza Breaks Down: Emotional Farewell Message Sent as Pirates Legend Officially Exits

Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza has delivered a heartfelt tribute to Mandla Ncikazi following the coach’s departure from the Soweto-based club, ending a five-year association that coincided with a successful period in the Buccaneers’ recent history.

Pirates announced on Thursday, 22 October 2026, that Ncikazi would leave his position as assistant coach to pursue a new opportunity as a head coach in the Premier Soccer League. His exit marks the conclusion of an important chapter at the club, where he contributed to several major achievements.

Khoza acknowledged Ncikazi’s commitment and influence during his time with the Buccaneers, expressing appreciation for his work while supporting his decision to pursue a new challenge.

“Mandla leaves with our gratitude and our blessing. His contribution to Orlando Pirates has been evident throughout his time with us. We respect his wish to pursue this new opportunity and wish him success as he takes on a new responsibility,” Khoza said.

Ncikazi joined Orlando Pirates in June 2021 after building his reputation at Lamontville Golden Arrows. He initially worked alongside Fadlu Davids, and the technical team guided the Buccaneers to the CAF Confederation Cup final during the 2021/22 season. However, Pirates lost the final to Morocco’s RS Berkane in a penalty shootout.

Following Davids’ departure, Ncikazi continued working within the coaching structure, serving under Jose Riveiro before remaining part of the technical setup during Abdeslam Ouaddou’s tenure. He also briefly served as co-coach in 2025.

Throughout his time at Mayfair, Ncikazi formed part of a technical team that collected nine trophies. These achievements included four consecutive MTN8 titles, two Nedbank Cup victories, the Carling Knockout, the Carling Black Label Cup and the Betway Premiership championship.

Although questions had emerged about his future, Pirates indicated that Ncikazi wanted to return to a leading coaching position. Ouaddou also rejected suggestions that disagreements between them had contributed to the departure, explaining that his assistant had been recovering from surgery.

Ncikazi is now returning to Golden Arrows, where he has been appointed head coach. The move gives him an opportunity to take charge of his own team again and guide the KwaZulu-Natal club through the demanding Premiership season.

For Orlando Pirates, his departure brings an end to a productive partnership. For Ncikazi, it opens a fresh chapter filled with new responsibilities and expectations.

Khoza’s message reflects the club’s appreciation for the coach’s service and recognises the role he played in the Buccaneers’ recent successes.
