Dangote Refinery IPO Could Attract Millions of New Investors, Says NGX Chief
Nigeria’s capital market could experience significant growth as the public share offering by Dangote Petroleum Refinery attracts attention from investors across Africa.
Temi Popoola, chief executive of Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group), said the refinery’s $1.6 billion initial public offering (IPO) could increase the number of active investors in Nigeria’s capital market by three to five times.
According to a Reuters report published on October 22, Popoola explained that the offering could encourage more Nigerians to participate in the stock market while strengthening investment connections between Nigeria and other African countries.
Currently, approximately 12 million Nigerians participate in capital markets, representing about five per cent of the population. However, only hundreds of thousands actively trade, highlighting the potential for broader participation.
To reach more prospective investors, the Nigerian Exchange Group is exploring accessible distribution methods, including digital platforms, point-of-sale channels and basic mobile phones.
The initiative also aims to improve connections between Nigerian investors and other African markets, including those in Kenya, Egypt, Botswana and Ethiopia.
The Dangote refinery share offering is expected to raise approximately $1.6 billion, making it one of the largest public share offerings in Africa. The proceeds are intended to support the company’s expansion plans.
However, the anticipated growth in investor participation will depend on actual market activity and the willingness of Nigerians to invest.
The development could represent an important opportunity to expand public participation in Nigeria’s capital market and strengthen the country’s position as a destination for investment.
