Da Cruz Reacts to Chiefs’ Painful Exit
Kaizer Chiefs’ elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup has left Da Cruz frustrated, with the coach believing his team created enough opportunities to secure a much more comfortable victory against Zambia’s Red Arrows.
Chiefs won the second leg 1-0, with Bradley Cross scoring, but the result was not enough to send them through to the group stages. The tie ended 1-1 on aggregate before Red Arrows prevailed in the penalty shoot-out.
Reflecting on the performance, Da Cruz argued that Chiefs dominated the match and should have converted more of their chances instead of allowing the contest to reach penalties.
“We dominated all the game, we created a lot of chances,” he said.
The coach acknowledged that the match was ultimately decided by the shoot-out, but maintained that the team’s failure to finish its opportunities during normal time had already put its qualification hopes at risk.
“We lost the game on penalties, but we actually lost it before because we created a lot of chances,” Da Cruz explained.
He added that Chiefs should have scored several goals based on the opportunities they created.
“We’re only scored one goal, normally we must win this game 3-0 or 4-0,” he said.
The comments highlight the disappointment surrounding Chiefs’ continental campaign. Although the team managed to win the return leg, its inability to turn attacking pressure into additional goals meant that the aggregate score remained level at full-time.
Chiefs had several opportunities to extend their lead after Cross found the net. Pule Mmodi sent a promising cutback over the bar, while Mduduzi Shabalala was unable to beat Red Arrows goalkeeper Charles Kalumba in a one-on-one situation.
Those missed chances proved costly as the match proceeded to penalties, where Chiefs failed to convert three attempts. Ethan Chislett missed the decisive kick, allowing the Zambian side to advance to the group stages.
For Chiefs, the defeat was particularly painful because they had managed to win the match itself but could not do enough across the two legs to progress.
Da Cruz’s assessment places the spotlight on finishing and composure in front of goal, with the coach suggesting that better conversion of chances could have prevented the penalty shoot-out from determining the outcome.
The exit leaves Chiefs facing questions about their performance in continental competition, while the missed opportunities against Red Arrows are likely to remain a major talking point among supporters.
