Another Famous Ghanaian Journalist Confirmed Dead By Kwesi Pratt
Veteran Ghanaian journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr has paid tribute to his longtime friend Bright Oduro Kwarteng, a prominent socialist and patriot, following news of his death. Pratt announced the sad development in a post on his X account, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
Pratt described Bright as a committed Ghanaian who spent his life working towards the country’s progress. He disclosed that his friend died early in the morning and said the news had left him deeply affected.
Looking back on their friendship, Pratt said they first met in 1979 at Labone Estates through journalist Kweku Baako Jnr. He recalled that Bright displayed a strong understanding of politics and remained dedicated to the political philosophy of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
Bright was associated with several political organisations that promoted socialist and nationalist ideas, including MOWAS and the Socialist Revolutionary Youth League. He remained active in political affairs even after leaving Ghana during the early 1980s to live in the United Kingdom.
While in Britain, Bright collaborated with fellow Ghanaians such as Captain Baah-Achamfour, Addae-Sebo, Napoleon Abdulai and J.H. Mensah. Together, they operated under the Democratic Alliance of Ghana (DAG) and produced the “Gye Nyame” newsletter, which was critical of the PNDC administration headed by Jerry John Rawlings.
Bright eventually returned to Ghana and pursued a career in education and government service. At the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, he served as a lecturer and contributed to the training of young professionals.
He subsequently became Chief Director at the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, where he was involved in public service connected to Ghana’s cultural identity and tourism development.
In his message, Pratt celebrated Bright’s loyalty, patriotism and lifelong commitment to Ghana. He described the death as a painful loss, particularly for those who shared Bright’s political ideals and commitment to national development.
Bright Oduro Kwarteng’s life combined political activism, teaching and public service. His contributions are expected to remain part of the history of Ghana’s socialist movement and the country’s broader efforts to promote national progress.
