Xandy Kamel Explains Absence From Son’s Burial, Cites Custom and Husband’s Birthday
Ghanaian actress Xandy Kamel has spoken about the circumstances surrounding her absence from her first son’s burial, explaining that traditional restrictions and her decision to remain with her then-husband on his birthday influenced what happened.
In an interview with actress Emelia Brobbey, Kamel said her mother attended to the burial while she stayed at home with her former husband, Kaninja, as friends gathered to celebrate his birthday.
She recalled being deeply in love with him at the time and wanting to remain by his side. However, she also explained that her absence from the cemetery had a cultural dimension.
According to Kamel, her 16-year-old son drowned at Sakumono Beach after completing his Basic Education Certificate Examination. She said her community classified the drowning as an unnatural death, known as Atofo Wuɔ, and observed customs that prevented a mother from viewing her child’s body or accompanying it to the burial ground.
The actress said she had participated in initial traditional rituals at the seaside before her son’s body was recovered. His burial subsequently fell on September 17, the same day as Kaninja’s birthday.
Reflecting on the loss, Kamel said she felt unsupported by her then-husband during her grief. She alleged that he declined to accompany her to the police station and did not help with identifying the body or making funeral arrangements.
Her account described a period in which bereavement and difficulties within the marriage overlapped. The couple later divorced.
Kamel’s explanation places her absence from the burial within both the customs she said her family observed and the personal decisions she made during that painful period.
