“We Haven’t Seen What She Has Done for Women” – Otiko Djaba Criticises Vice President

Former Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djaba, has criticised Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang over what she considers a lack of decisive action on issues affecting women and girls in Ghana.

Djaba argued that the Vice President had not done enough to advance the interests of women since assuming office, despite her influential position in the country’s political leadership.

Speaking on Adom FM, the former minister said Prof. Opoku-Agyemang had a responsibility to use her position to advocate for women and girls and address challenges affecting them.

Her criticism comes amid allegations of sexual misconduct involving 19 female students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), for which former headmaster Zakaria Abdulai has been named in connection with the case.

“She [Vice President] is the highest woman to date in a position of leadership and decision-making. She attained this feat to be able to represent women in the country, and so, she must be able to effectively use her position to help girls and women,” she said.

Commenting on the matter, Djaba called on the Vice President to take a more active role in ensuring that the allegations are thoroughly investigated and the affected students receive the necessary assistance.

She stressed that public statements alone would not be sufficient, urging the Vice President to help ensure that the investigation proceeds properly and that appropriate measures are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Djaba also cautioned against any attempt to conceal the matter, emphasising the importance of providing psychological support to the affected students to help them cope with the emotional consequences of their reported experiences.

She further urged the Vice President to ensure that the ongoing investigations do not disrupt the students’ education, insisting that their academic progress and welfare must remain priorities throughout the process.

The former minister maintained that the situation required a firm response and called for coordinated efforts to protect the students, provide the necessary support and ensure accountability.

“Vice President, this is a serious call to action. Since she came to power, we haven’t seen what she has done for women. She must stand firm and make sure the female students get the needed help as well as ensure their education isn’t affected by what has happened,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has interdicted Abdulai as police investigations into the allegations continue.
