Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms including devaluation of the naira worsened poverty in Nigeria.

He spoke on Wednesday at the Financial Times Africa summit 2026 in London, United Kingdom (UK).

According to him, the sharp decline in the naira’s value had impoverished Nigerians and contributed to the country’s position as the world’s poverty capital.

He said: “We do not live in isolation as a country. We interact with the rest of the world. And overnight, you devalue the currency by 300 percent. The naira went from N500 to a dollar to N1,500 to a dollar.

The Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, says it received with deep sadness news of the loss of Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, elder statesman, nationalist and National Leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere.

The death, which occurred two days ago, was announced by Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Ondo State Governor.

The National Publicity Secretary of ACF, Prof. Muhammad-Baba, in a statement on Thursday said, “Pa Fasoranti was a well-known trailblazer as a quintessential nationalist, politician, a man of the people and as a deeply respected community leader who had served Nigeria very well as an ardent advocate of progressive politics and good governance who dedicated almost his entire life in the pursuit of these ideals.”

Pa Fasoranti spent a full century on earth and witnessed the best that Nigeria has had to offer even as he had lived to regret the nation’s missed opportunities for even greater achievements.

Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday sentenced one Sunday Frank to 40 years in correctional custody for acting as a spy for notorious Benue bandit leader, the late Terwase Akwaza, popularly known as Gana.

He was arraigned on a four-count charge filed by the Federal Government and prosecuted by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN.

According to the charge, the convict also kidnapped one Samuel in 2022 and held him hostage until the sum of N40,000 was paid as ransom.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and Ugandan health authorities have given differing accounts of the origin of Nigeria’s index case of Ebola virus.

Director-General of the Africa CDC, Jean Kaseya, said the female patient was born in Uganda and had travelled to the country, where she spent several days before her husband joined her.

Speaking on Channels Television, Kaseya said the couple returned to Abuja on October 3, adding that authorities were working with their counterparts in Nigeria, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to establish the source of the infection.

“I am talking to Ugandan, DRC and Nigerian authorities, that the person we know today without any doubt, that this is a Ugandan-born person who went to Uganda and she was there for some days and the husband flew to join her in Uganda,” Kaseya said.
