“They Are Coming for Me” Gov. George Natembeya Alleges Govt Plans to Frustrate Him

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has expressed concern over what he perceives as growing pressure from the national government, alleging that efforts are being made to undermine his leadership as political tensions continue to rise.

Natembeya’s remarks come amid an escalating disagreement with President William Ruto’s administration over development priorities, the management of county affairs and the governor’s political position ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The governor has consistently defended devolution, insisting that county governments should be allowed to discharge their constitutional responsibilities without undue interference from the national government.

His latest concerns have attracted attention as political differences between him and the President continue to shape discussions in the Western Kenya region.

The reported withdrawal of Natembeya’s security officers has emerged as one of the key issues surrounding the dispute.

The governor has sought clarification over the decision, with questions arising about the circumstances surrounding the changes to his security arrangements.

Some of his political allies have interpreted the development as a possible attempt to intimidate him because of his outspoken criticism of the government. However, claims that the decision was politically motivated have not been independently established.

The incident has further intensified debate over the treatment of opposition-leaning leaders and the relationship between county administrations and the national government.

The political disagreement has also played out publicly, with several government leaders criticising Natembeya’s approach to development and his relationship with the national administration.

President Ruto has emphasised the need for cooperation between the two levels of government to accelerate development projects and improve service delivery.

Natembeya, on his part, has maintained that cooperation should not come at the expense of constitutional independence and accountability.

The governor’s concerns emerge as political leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, when questions of regional influence, alliances and leadership will feature prominently.

Whether the dispute will lead to further confrontation or renewed engagement between the two sides remains uncertain. For now, Natembeya’s allegations have added to the growing political debate over devolution, security and the relationship between the national government and county leadership.
