Ghana’s Communication Minister, Samuel Nartey George, has urged African countries to stop relying too much on foreign technology and start building digital solutions that meet their own needs.

He made the statement while speaking at Digital Economy Live 2026 at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra.

Sam George said Africa would struggle to build a competitive digital economy if countries on the continent continued to depend heavily on technology developed abroad.

He explained that African nations must invest in systems that understand their local languages, cultures and development challenges.

According to the minister, Africa has the opportunity to develop its own digital solutions instead of depending on foreign companies to provide most of the technology used on the continent.

He also stressed the need to train more technology experts and support local innovators who can develop products to solve problems in African communities.

The minister believes that building local technological capacity would help African countries gain greater control over their digital future and compete more effectively in the global market.

His comments have also drawn attention to the role of governments in supporting digital businesses, creating opportunities for young developers and establishing policies that encourage innovation.

As technology becomes increasingly important in education, healthcare, business and public services, African countries face the challenge of ensuring that digital solutions serve their people effectively.

Sam George’s message was that Africa must move beyond depending mainly on imported technology and invest more in homegrown ideas.

He called for greater efforts to develop digital systems that reflect the continent’s identity, address its challenges and support long-term economic growth.
