Stop Blaming Foreigners: Ramaphosa’s Immigration Remarks Spark a Major Debate Across South Africa

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on citizens to avoid blaming foreign nationals for the country’s unemployment crisis, stressing that joblessness and economic hardship require practical solutions rather than hostility towards migrants.

The President’s position comes amid growing public concerns about unemployment, undocumented immigration and pressure on public services. These issues have contributed to tensions in several communities, making immigration a major subject of national debate.

Ramaphosa has maintained that migration has existed throughout history, with people crossing national borders for various reasons, including conflict, political instability, family reunification and the search for better economic opportunities.

He has warned against presenting foreign nationals as the main cause of South Africa’s economic difficulties, particularly the widespread lack of employment affecting millions of citizens.

Unemployment remains a serious challenge, especially among young South Africans. Many households continue to struggle financially, prompting calls for government intervention and policies that can create sustainable employment.

During his address on migration in June 2026, Ramaphosa argued that illegal immigration alone could not explain the country’s social and economic problems. He highlighted the importance of economic expansion, increased investment and industrial development in creating more jobs.

However, his position does not suggest that immigration violations should be ignored. The government maintains that immigration regulations must be enforced and that individuals working or running businesses in South Africa must comply with the law.

Ramaphosa has also emphasised that immigration enforcement should be handled by authorised officials in accordance with the Constitution and established legal procedures.

He further stressed the importance of cooperation among African countries, explaining that South Africa cannot independently resolve every challenge associated with irregular migration.

Conflict, poverty and limited economic opportunities in other countries continue to push some people towards migration. Tackling these underlying issues requires cooperation on economic development, security, border management and lawful migration.
