South Africa Announces R10 Billion Fuel Relief: Here Is When Petrol and Diesel Levy Cuts Begin
South African motorists and businesses have received an important update after Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced temporary fuel levy reductions aimed at easing pressure on household budgets.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, during the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement in Parliament. According to the government’s news agency, the intervention is expected to provide R10 billion in relief.
Under the announced measures, the general fuel levy will be reduced by R3 per litre for diesel and R1.50 per litre for petrol from 4 November until 1 December 2026.
A second phase will continue until 5 January 2027, with the diesel levy reduction decreasing to R1.50 per litre and the petrol levy reduction falling to R1 per litre.
The government says the relief will be financed by returning R10 billion previously transferred to the Central Energy Fund to the National Revenue Fund. The aim is to help households and businesses manage higher fuel-related expenses without compromising the sustainability of public finances.
South Africa relies heavily on imported fuel, making local prices vulnerable to changes in international oil markets. Consequently, a levy reduction does not guarantee that every motorist will experience the same overall change in pump prices.
The measures are temporary, so motorists should pay attention to the implementation dates and subsequent fuel-price announcements.
What do you think about this decision? Will the temporary fuel levy reductions make a meaningful difference to South African households, or is more long-term cost-of-living relief needed? Share your thoughts in the comments.
