When residents forced themselves into her home, they made a shocking discovery.

The 72-year-old gogo from Illovu, south of Durban, was found dead in her house, and her body was already decomposed on Tuesday, 20 October.

Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairwoman and resident Pro Mkhize said Gloria’s neighbours told her they were worried.

“They said she wasn’t the kind of person who stayed indoors. So, when they didn’t see her for two months, they became worried and informed us.”

She said a foul smell from her house sparked fear among abahlali.

“We went to find her sister who lives somewhere else, and she came with us.

“She also informed us that she too had been worried as she too went to check for her, but she didn’t see her, and no one opened the door for her when she arrived, and she left,” said Mkhize.

She said they also knocked on the gogo’s door before forcing it open.

“We were shocked to find her dead inside the house. And what shocked us the most is that her son, whom she stayed with, was sitting next to her decomposed body.”

The gogo’s sister, Tina Mashila, said the family was devastated after finding her sister dead in her house.

“We were contacted by residents who told us they haven’t seen my sister for two months, which is strange as she was always seen outside her house.”

She said her sister once told her her son demanded money for cigarettes from her.

“At this point, we don’t know what could have happened to her. Her son is not mentally well. Che cops didn’t arrest him after finding him with her dead mum in the house.”

She said they’re currently looking for her sister’s documents to help start preparations for her funeral.

The KZN police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the matter.

He said KwaMakhutha police have opened an inquest docket after a decomposed body of a 72-year-old woman was discovered at her place of residence in Illovu on Tuesday, 2026.

“Circumstances that could have led to the death are being investigated,” said Colonel Netshiunda.
