SASSA Targets R315 Million in Grants Paid to KwaZulu-Natal Public Servants

The South African Social Security Agency has stepped up efforts to recover more than R315 million in social grant payments reportedly made to ineligible public servants in KwaZulu-Natal, raising fresh questions about the protection of public funds.

According to a report published by SABC News on 21 October 2026, SASSA in KwaZulu-Natal has partnered with heads of provincial government departments to identify affected employees and recover money owed to the state.

Thamo Mzobe, SASSA’s regional executive manager in the province, said the partnership would focus on tackling fraud and corruption involving employees who receive government salaries while also drawing social grants for which they do not qualify.

The agency began reviewing social grant payments in April 2025 as part of efforts to prevent improper payments and ensure that assistance reaches eligible beneficiaries. The latest recovery initiative is intended to strengthen cooperation between SASSA and provincial departments.

The issue has also attracted parliamentary attention. In a statement published on 6 October 2026, Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Social Development raised concerns about weaknesses in the grant payment system, including payments to government employees and people who had died. The committee called for stronger verification and controls.

Recovering the money could help protect resources intended for vulnerable South Africans. However, the reported amount should not be interpreted as proof that every affected employee has been convicted of fraud; individual cases must be assessed through the appropriate processes.

Why it matters: Stronger checks could help protect social grants and improve public confidence in government spending.

Question for readers: Should government departments face stricter checks to prevent public employees from receiving grants they are not eligible for?
