The president and chairman of Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Hajia Queensley Seghosime has called for institutions that command public trust and policies that outlive political cycles.

Speaking on Tuesday at the opening of the 56th Annual Accountants’ Conference at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja, Seghosime said government must build enabling environment for enterprise to flourish and productive economy that creates jobs.

She noted that the nation’s strength rests on a shared commitment to the national interest, not on the rhythm of elections.

“A secure environment enables enterprise to flourish. A productive economy creates jobs. Credible institutions sustain both,” she told the gathering about 12,000 delegates that registered for the conference, themed “Beyond Numbers: Strengthening the Economy, Securing the Nation.”

The ICAN President’s comment is coming three months to the 2027 general elections in Nigeria. According to her, Our responsibility is not merely to prepare Nigeria for the next election, but to help build a Nigeria that will prosper well beyond it.

Seghosime said the national security today goes beyond the protection of lives and property, noting that It now covers the security of food systems, energy supplies, digital infrastructure, livelihoods and institutions.

She acknowledged the gains of reforms of President Bola Tinubu led administration, describing them as difficult decisions which helps in recording the economy growth of about 4.2 per cent in the first half of 2026.

She cautioned however that ambition must reach beyond improved indicators to productive economy, thriving enterprises, stronger institutions and better living standards for every Nigerian.

The President said the event is a practical expression of the Institute’s Presidential Strategic Doctrine, “WE ARE ICAN,” and commended the speakers and the Conference Planning Committee, chaired by Dr Tobi Ayodele Abiola, as well as partners and sponsors.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his Edo counterpart, Monday Okpebholo, the Ministers of Education, Finance and Power, the Executive Chairman, National Revenue Service, Zach Adedeji FCA, members of the National Assembly, and the presidents of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), the Pan-African Federation of Accountants (PAFA) and the Association of Accounting Bodies West Africa (ABWA) and other dignitaries graced the event.
