Bernardo, who joined Real Madrid from Manchester City in the summer, scored his first goal for the Spanish giants to help Jose Mourinho’s side maintain their 100 per cent record in the competition.
Leipzig started brightly and looked the more dangerous team during much of the first half, creating several opportunities that could have changed the course of the match.
However, Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois kept the German side at bay with important saves to deny Christopher Nkunku and Romulo, ensuring the hosts remained in contention.
Real eventually broke the deadlock two minutes before half-time when Bernardo Silva reacted quickest inside the box to force the ball over the line after Guler’s effort took a deflection and slipped through goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt’s legs.
The goal gave Madrid renewed confidence heading into the break, and they returned for the second half with greater attacking intent.
Vandevoordt initially kept Leipzig in the contest, producing an excellent save to turn Federico Valverde’s powerful effort around the post early in the second half.
However, the goalkeeper was beaten again when Guler met Mbappe’s header across the face of goal and bundled the ball over the line for Real’s second.
Mbappe continued to threaten as Madrid took control of the contest. The French forward narrowly missed a chance after Jude Bellingham cut the ball back to him, sending his effort into the side netting.
The prolific striker eventually got his goal late in the match, curling a superb finish into the corner from the edge of the penalty area to register his 12th goal in 12 appearances this season.
Leipzig refused to surrender without a fight and pulled one back through Tidiam Gomis, who finished off a well-worked attacking move to give the visitors a late consolation.
But any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished when Diomande, who joined Real from Leipzig during the summer in a ÂŁ120 million move, produced a spectacular volley from outside the box just two minutes later to seal the 4-1 victory against his former club.
The result strengthens Real Madrid’s position in the Champions League as Mourinho’s men turn their attention to Sunday’s first Clasico of the season against Barcelona on October 25.
Madrid will then travel to Greece to face AEK Athens on November 4, while Leipzig prepare to host Manchester City later that evening as they look to recover from their defeat.
