Reactions as Olu of Warri Takes on Chess Master Tunde Onakoya in a Game at His Palace

A friendly chess match between the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse, and renowned Nigerian chess player Tunde Onakoya has attracted public attention following Onakoya’s visit to the monarch’s palace in Warri, Delta State.

TVC News reported in a post shared on its official Instagram page on Thursday, October 22, 2026, that Onakoya arrived at the palace with members of his team, where he and the traditional ruler played a game of chess.

During the meeting, the Olu of Warri highlighted the importance of chess in developing strategic thinking, problem-solving abilities, and intellectual growth. He particularly stressed the value of introducing the game to children in underserved communities who may have limited access to educational opportunities.

The monarch also noted that chess could serve as a tool for inspiring young people, building their confidence, and helping them discover their potential. He emphasised the need to create opportunities that enable children from disadvantaged backgrounds to develop their talents and acquire valuable life skills.

Onakoya is widely recognised for his work through Chess in Slums Africa, an initiative dedicated to making chess accessible to children in disadvantaged communities. Through the programme, the game is used to promote education, discipline, critical thinking, and personal development among young people.

The encounter between the monarch and the chess advocate underscores the potential for traditional institutions and social development organisations to collaborate in empowering the younger generation.

Beyond the friendly match, their meeting has renewed attention on the role of chess in education and youth development. It also highlights the importance of supporting programmes that use intellectual activities to equip children with essential skills and expand their opportunities for a better future.
