A popular television meteorologist has vanished from the airwaves just months after making a long-awaited comeback to the city she once fled in the wake of a devastating personal tragedy.
Dagmar Midcap, the charismatic weather presenter who won over viewers during her first stint in Atlanta, has reportedly left CBS Atlanta after less than a year – with no public explanation for her sudden departure.
The Canadian-born broadcaster, who returned to the Georgia city in late 2025 after more than 15 years away, stopped appearing on air in May.
Her profile has since been removed from the stationās website, fueling questions about what happened behind the scenes as neither Midcap nor the station has publicly explained her cryptic exit.
The abrupt disappearance is particularly salient given the hopes surrounding her return a homecoming that came after years spent rebuilding her career following one of the darkest periods of her life.
Midcap first arrived in Atlanta in 2008, joining what was then CBS 46, known as WGCL-TV. Her warm personality, infectious enthusiasm and natural on-screen presence quickly made her a hit with viewers.
Such was her popularity that station bosses even featured her on promotional billboards.
But behind the smiling television persona, Midcap was facing an unimaginable loss.
In 2010, she left both the station and Atlanta after her boyfriend took his own life. At the time, she spoke of feeling ‘haunted by his presence in the city’ and said she needed to get away.
Midcap spent a year in Los Angeles before moving to San Diego, where she joined NBC 7.
She remained there for 12 years, establishing herself as a familiar face on local television while occasionally reporting on environmental issues, climate change and animal rights.
In 2024, she also began spending months at a time travelling independently overseas, documenting illegal animal trafficking. Atlanta remained her home base during these trips, bringing her back into the orbit of the city she had left behind more than a decade earlier.
And when CBS launched its new Atlanta news operation on WUPA-TV, Midcap was brought on board as the obvious choice for an evening meteorologist.
The station was building a newsroom from scratch after Gray Televisionās WANF-TV relinquished its CBS affiliation the previous summer and became an independent station.
For Midcap, the move offered the chance to return to familiar territory while joining a new team.
Speaking to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in March, she suggested that the people behind the operation and the culture they cultivated, had played a major role in her decision.
‘I might be the weakest link, but they actually hired non-jerks,’ she said. ‘That makes the biggest difference.’
Shawn Holder of CBS Atlanta praised her authenticity, saying he had always admired the way she interacted with viewers through the camera.
‘Dagmar on camera is Dagmar in person,’ he said, adding that her caring nature came across on screen.
Yet the promising reunion appears to have been short-lived.
During her interview earlier this year, Midcap acknowledged some difficulties with the augmented-reality technology introduced when CBS Atlanta launched. She expressed hope that the systems would improve, but there was no public indication that these concerns were connected to her eventual departure.
She had also spoken of wanting to contribute more than weather reports, drawing on her experience covering conservation, animal welfare and climate change in California.
During her time on air in Atlanta, however, she remained focused on forecasting. Now, the circumstances surrounding her exit remain obscure.
The last posts on Midcapās public Facebook and Instagram accounts show her admiring a boa in Madagascar, offering a glimpse of the wildlife and travel interests that been a regular feature in her life outside broadcasting.
Whether she intends to return to television, continue her overseas work or pursue another path has not been publicly established.
For now, CBS Atlanta has moved on with its evening forecasts. Orelon Sidney, who previously worked at CNN and the Atlanta-based Weather Channel, is now presenting the weather during the stationās 6pm and 11pm newscasts.
