Political Storm Expected in Mt Kenya as These 2 Opposition Leaders Plan Mega Rallies
A major political moment is expected from this weekend, when Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party and Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi outfit hold their first joint rally in Nyahururu.
The event is being described as the start of a wave that could sweep across the country as the opposition steps up its campaign ahead of 2027.
The rally follows the visit that Sifuna and members of his faction made to Gachagua’s home in Wamunyoro after the former deputy president returned from the United States.
That meeting raised plenty of questions about whether the two camps would work together, and the Nyahururu gathering will be the first public test of that relationship. Supporters of both leaders will be watching to see how the two share the stage and what message they deliver.
Nyahururu is a politically significant choice. The town sits in Laikipia County, close to the meeting point of several regions, which makes it a convenient place to draw crowds from different parts of the country.
Gachagua has a strong base in Mt Kenya, while Sifuna has been building a following among urban and younger voters. Putting the two together in one venue sends a signal about the kind of coalition they hope to build.
The joint appearance is also likely to settle some of the debate over how close the two leaders really are. Commentators have been divided, with some warning that an alliance could cost Sifuna support in other regions, and others arguing that unity is needed to challenge President William Ruto. The reaction to the rally may help show which side is right.
Organisers have not released a full programme, and it is not yet clear which other opposition figures will attend. More details are expected as the weekend draws closer, along with the plans for the other rallies that are said to follow.
