Pirates Told They Are Being Unfair to Key Striker Despite His Impressive Goalscoring Record

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Sifiso Myeni has urged the club to give Sebastian Pedersen more opportunities to play, insisting that the Norwegian striker deserves sufficient time to demonstrate his abilities under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.

Pedersen arrived at the Soweto-based club during the off-season after leaving Norwegian side Sogndal. The 27-year-old signed a two-year contract with the Buccaneers, raising expectations that he could strengthen their attacking options. However, he has struggled to establish himself as a regular member of the team since making the move to South Africa.

Before joining Orlando Pirates, Pedersen reportedly recorded 51 goals in 117 appearances, an impressive return that suggested he could become an important contributor in front of goal. Despite this record, the striker has not enjoyed an extended opportunity to showcase his finishing ability in competitive matches.

His limited involvement has raised questions among some supporters, who believe the club should allow him more time on the pitch before making a final assessment of his contribution.

Speaking on Omni Audio Africa, Myeni expressed concerns about the striker’s situation and called on Ouaddou to provide him with a fair opportunity. The former midfielder pointed out that other forwards, including Evidence Makgopa, Boitumelo Radiopane and Yanela Mbuthuma, have received opportunities to represent the team.

Myeni believes Pedersen should also be given sufficient playing time to demonstrate what he can offer. In his view, the coaching staff need to assess the Norwegian forward through regular match involvement rather than leaving him with limited opportunities to prove himself.

Nevertheless, Pedersen’s lack of minutes does not necessarily mean that the coaching staff have lost confidence in him. Ouaddou has previously indicated that the striker needed time to improve his fitness and adapt to his new surroundings.

Adjusting to a different country, league and tactical system can be challenging for any player. Pedersen must develop an understanding with his teammates while familiarising himself with the demands and expectations of South African football.

Giving him more opportunities could help improve his confidence and allow the technical team to determine whether his previous goalscoring record can translate into success at Pirates.

Ultimately, the decision rests with Ouaddou and his coaching staff, who must balance competition for places with the need to assess their available options. Supporters will be watching upcoming fixtures to see whether Pedersen receives a greater role in the team’s attacking plans.

Myeni’s comments have reignited the debate over whether Orlando Pirates should trust the Norwegian striker with more playing time or continue with the forwards currently preferred by the coach.
