Twitter | Facebook | WhatsApp | Copy LinkGhana’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Centre is set to be established in the next two (2) years, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has announced.

He disclosed this while speaking at the Joy News’ Digital Economy Forum on AI and the Ghana Economy. The Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament, Sam George, said Phase I will provide computing infrastructure for local researchers, universities and businesses developing or using artificial intelligence, reducing their reliance on services purchased from foreign providers.

Sam George said the government is currently undertaking procurement processes with the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) to secure the necessary equipment and infrastructure for the project.

“We are currently going through procurement with PPA on getting a data centre, the computer infrastructure and all the various parts of it put together. In 24 months, we should have phase one completed, with serious computing infrastructure that we can then give to our researchers, industry, and universities, who are currently buying tokens and capacity outside the country”, Sam George stated.

He continued that the data centre would not address all of Ghana's artificial intelligence needs within the Mahama administration's term, describing the project as an initial step towards developing the country's AI infrastructure.

“It is the first step; it is a long journey. Are we going to fix all of our AI needs in two years before the Mahama administration is off? That is wishful thinking; it is impossible, but we are taking the key foundational steps that will set this country on the right track for its AI journey.”

This is not the first time Ghana will get a data centre, but it is the first of its AI data Centre. Ghana officially launched a National Data Centre in Accra in January 2016 to support government digital services and data storage.

The facility, managed by the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), was established to host government applications, improve data security, and provide shared ICT infrastructure for state institutions. A secondary disaster recovery centre was also established at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

Even before that, Ghana had established a specialised National Data Centre in 2010 at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission to support the monitoring of seismic and nuclear-test-related data under an agreement with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO). However, that facility served a specific scientific and security purpose rather than general computing or AI development.
