Peter Obi Reacts to NYSC Abduction, Demands Immediate Rescue of 20 Prospective Corps Members

According to a report by The Daily Post on Sunday, October 4, 2026, Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for the immediate and safe rescue of about 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members reportedly abducted while travelling to their orientation camps.

The incident occurred on October 1 along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in the Umunoha area of Imo State, where two buses conveying passengers from Ibadan came under attack. Police authorities said 10 victims were rescued at the scene, while efforts continued to locate those still missing.

Reacting to the development, Obi described the abduction as a disturbing indication of the country’s security challenges. He said the affected graduates were preparing to serve their country but were unable to travel safely.

“These young Nigerians were preparing to serve their nation, but they were unable to travel safely on our roads. Families are increasingly burdened by the fear that their loved ones could fall victim to kidnapping,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor stressed that protecting lives and property remained a primary responsibility of government.

“We cannot continue to regard insecurity as an ordinary occurrence or act only after people’s lives have been disrupted,” he said.

Obi urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue all the abducted prospective corps members and apprehend those behind the attack.

“I call for the immediate and safe rescue of all the abducted corps members and the arrest of those responsible,” he added.

The police have since deployed additional tactical teams and senior officers to Imo State to coordinate the ongoing search-and-rescue operation.
