Obi Flies in From UK, Attends Burial of Supporter Ifeanyi Nwolie Shot Dead During NDC Campaign

According to a Facebook post on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Peter Obi condemned political violence following the death of his supporter, Ifeanyi Nwolie. Nwolie was reportedly shot during a political activity organised by the NDC on October 10, 2026.

Obi said he arrived at Abuja Airport from the United Kingdom at 5:30 a.m. on Thursday. He then boarded a 7 a.m. flight to Enugu to attend Nwolie’s funeral. The deceased was buried in his hometown of Afa, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.

He described Nwolie’s death as painful. He said it reflected the devastating human cost of Nigeria’s hostile political environment. He stressed the need to protect lives from political violence.

As the country approaches the 2027 general elections, Obi urged candidates at all levels of government to reject violence, ethnic division and religious intolerance. He said campaigns should focus on policies that would improve the country.

Obi said democracy could only thrive when citizens freely expressed their political choices. He added that voters must be able to participate in elections without fear. He maintained that the process of attaining public office was more important than the office itself.

The former presidential candidate also pledged to support Nwolie’s mother. He assured her that he would stand by her as her late son had done. Obi stressed that respect for the rule of law was essential to national stability.

He warned that undermining it could lead to disorder and anarchy. He called for a Nigeria where human life was valued above political ambition and citizens could exercise their democratic rights in peace and safety.
