Obasanjo Reacts As He Was Asked If President Bola Tinubu Deserves A Second Term
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has reacted after he was asked whether President Bola Tinubu deserves a second term in office to see his policies through and consolidate on their gains, questioning the impact of the administration’s economic policies on Nigerians.
According to a repor by DAILY INDEPENDENT on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Obasanjo challenged the premise of the question, asking what policies Tinubu intended to continue when, according to him, Nigerians were becoming poorer under the current administration.
The former president criticised the impact of the naira’s depreciation on the purchasing power of Nigerians, arguing that the country’s economic situation should be considered before discussing whether Tinubu deserves another term.
Obasanjo also compared Nigeria’s economic performance with that of Ghana, citing the movement of the Ghanaian cedi against the United States dollar as an example of a different economic trajectory.
He noted that Ghana’s current president inherited an exchange rate of 16 cedis to a dollar and reportedly strengthened the currency to 10 cedis to a dollar within six months.
Obasanjo further explained that Ghanaian cocoa farmers had appealed to their president over the declining prices they received for their produce, prompting calls for him to slow the currency’s appreciation.
Here is what Olusegun Obasanjo said, “What policies are you seeing through? You impoverish your people and you want to see impoverishment through? What are you seeing through?”
