Ndindi Nyoro Raises Questions Over Ruto and Dangote’s Lamu Refinery Deal
kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has raised concerns over the proposed Dangote oil refinery in Lamu, calling for greater transparency regarding the investment agreement and its potential impact on Kenya’s petroleum sector.
The proposed refinery, associated with Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, is expected to have a processing capacity of up to 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The project has attracted attention because of its potential to strengthen regional fuel production and reduce dependence on imported refined petroleum products.
However, Nyoro has questioned whether the terms of the deal could limit Kenya’s freedom to source petroleum products from alternative suppliers offering competitive prices. He has also called for greater scrutiny of the financial arrangements, ownership structure and possible obligations attached to the investment.
The debate has extended to the proposed sale of Kenya Pipeline Company shares, with Nyoro raising questions about the transaction’s relationship to the refinery project and its potential implications for public funds.
These concerns remain subject to verification, and any allegations of improper dealings should not be treated as established facts without supporting evidence.
The government and project stakeholders should clarify the agreement’s terms to enable Kenyans to understand the expected benefits, risks and financial commitments.
As discussions continue, transparency and public accountability will be important in determining whether the proposed refinery delivers long-term benefits to Kenya’s economy and consumers.
