NDC Speaks About Ghanaians Shading VP Opoku
National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy Communications Director Julius Kwame Anthony has questioned calls for Vice-President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to speak on every matter concerning women, arguing that such expectations unfairly focus on her gender.
Mr Anthony made the remarks while defending the Vice-President amid public criticism over the alleged sexual abuse involving students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
According to him, being a woman should not automatically make the Vice-President responsible for commenting on every issue that affects women. He suggested that public discussions should consider her official responsibilities rather than judge her response solely on the basis of her gender.
The issue has generated considerable debate, with some political figures questioning the Vice-President’s response to the allegations at the school. Critics have maintained that, as Ghana’s first female Vice-President, her position gives her a particular responsibility to speak out on matters affecting girls and women.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang has, however, called for the law to take its course, describing the matter as a serious concern with significant implications for those affected.
The allegations have also prompted broader discussions about student safety, accountability in educational institutions and the need for appropriate action when misconduct is reported.
The school’s headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, has reportedly been suspended pending investigations into the matter. The allegations remain subject to investigation, and the findings are expected to help establish the facts and guide any further action.
The controversy has increasingly featured in political exchanges between the governing NDC and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly over the response of public officials and the level of accountability expected from those in leadership.
Beyond the political disagreement, the case has renewed calls for stronger safeguards to protect students and ensure that allegations of abuse in educational institutions are properly investigated.
The investigations are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the allegations and determine the appropriate next steps.
