Letter That Angered Agonamanhene and Led to Ban on NPP MP Mavis Nkansah-Boadu

A letter inviting the Agonamanhene to a school football tournament has triggered a dispute between the traditional ruler and the Member of Parliament for Afigya Sekyere East, Mavis Nkansah-Boadu.

The Omanhene of the Agona Traditional Area in the Ashanti Region, Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II, announced a ban preventing the MP from organising social events within his traditional jurisdiction, citing what he described as disrespect towards his authority.

The disagreement centres on an invitation dated October 8, 2026, asking the traditional ruler to attend the grand finale of the MNB Inter-Senior High School Football Tournament scheduled for Friday, October 23, at the Agona Community AstroTurf.

In his response, titled “Disrespectful Conduct,” the traditional ruler expressed displeasure with the way the invitation was addressed to him.

According to the report, the MP addressed the letter to “The Chief, Agona Traditional Council,” a description the Omanhene considered inappropriate given his position as the recognised traditional leader of the area.

Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II said he had completed the customary rites and ceremonies associated with his installation, including swearing an oath before Agona Amantuonson on June 4, 2026, and before Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on June 29, 2026.

He also referred to subsequent traditional ceremonies, arguing that his position and status should have been recognised in the invitation.

The chief reportedly viewed the wording as an insult to his authority and, by extension, that of the Asantehene.

Following the disagreement, the Omanhene announced an immediate ban on social events organised by the MP within his traditional jurisdiction.

The directive specifically mentioned the upcoming football tournament, which was scheduled to take place on October 23.

The affected communities include Agona, Bipoa, Wiamoase, Bedomase, Afamanaso, Akrofonso and Amponyinamoa.

In the letter, the traditional ruler maintained that he would not allow what he considered misconduct to undermine his authority.

The decision places the planned tournament at the centre of the dispute, although the full implications of the ban and any subsequent response from the MP remain unclear from the reports reviewed.

The disagreement highlights the importance of protocol and customary recognition in relations between elected representatives and traditional authorities in Ghana.

Traditional leaders often play significant roles in community development, cultural affairs and local events. Invitations to such leaders can therefore carry expectations concerning titles, status and customary etiquette.

At the same time, the incident raises questions about how disputes over protocol may affect public programmes, particularly events involving students and community participation.

The football tournament was intended to bring together senior high school teams, making its planned finale an important consideration for organisers and participating schools.

Neither the invitation dispute nor the announcement of the ban, on its own, establishes whether the tournament will proceed as scheduled. Further clarification from the MP or the tournament organisers would help establish the next steps.
