Kingston: ‘lt will be a miracle for the Black Stars to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations’

The former Ghana international is pessimistic about the beleaguered four-time African Champions chances of securing qualification for the next year’s continental showpiece following their difficult start to the qualifying campaign last month

lt will be a miracle for the Black Stars to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, according to retired Ghana international Laryea Kingston.

The West African powerhouse are currently rock-bottom in Group C standings with a four-goal deficit following their back-to-back defeats to Ivory Coast and The Gambia in their opening two games in the qualifiers in September.

Ahead of Ghana’s must-win encounters against Somalia for the third round of games in the qualifying campaign, the former Ghana U17 tactician feels victories over the two-legged tie would be insignificant as the qualifiers remain a foregone conclusion for the four-time African champions, with lvory Coast and The Gambia already on the verge of securing qualification out of group C given their accumulated six points apiece so far.

Speaking in an interview, the Ugandan Under-17 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) CECAFA winning coach has told 3Sports: ”Looking at the situation now, it will be a miracle for us to qualify.”

“Two teams have six points it means Ghana will have to win all games. For me, it will be a very difficult and it will take a miracle to turn things around,” he added.

The Black Stars would be missing out on the main football tournament in Africa for the second consecutive time if they fail to qualify for the 2027 AFCON edition next year having missed out on the 2025 edition in Morocco.
