Kenyans Left Disappointed After The Met Department Issued This Update About The El Nino Rains
Kenyans who have been waiting for the October to December short rains may have to put up with more dry weather.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has said that conditions over the Indian Ocean are interfering with the movement of rain bearing systems across the country, which means the rains many people were expecting could be delayed further.
According to the department, low pressure systems that developed over the northern Indian Ocean have temporarily slowed the southward movement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, commonly known as the ITCZ.
This belt of converging winds near the equator is one of the main drivers of rainfall during the short rains season. When it moves slowly or stalls, areas that depend on it for rain stay dry for longer.
The update will be a letdown for farmers in particular, many of whom prepare their land and plan planting around the start of the short rains.
A delay can affect planting schedules and put pressure on crops, pasture and water sources, especially in regions that rely heavily on seasonal rainfall. Pastoralist communities in drier parts of the country also depend on these rains to restore grazing land and fill water points.
The department described the slowdown as temporary, which suggests the pattern is expected to change as the systems shift.
It did not give an exact date for when the ITCZ will resume its southward movement or when different regions should expect their first significant rainfall. Those details will matter to residents trying to plan ahead.
Kenyans have been advised to keep following official forecasts as conditions develop. Weather patterns over the Indian Ocean can change quickly, and the department is expected to release further updates. For now, many people will have to wait a little longer for the rain to arrive.
