Like other civil servants, NYS officers also receive various allowances, including house allowance, commuter allowance, instructor allowance, NYS allowance, hardship allowance and other allowances applicable to high-ranking officers.
People have been raising concerns about salaries in the NYS. The service is categorised among Kenya’s disciplined services and plays a significant role in training young Kenyans aged between 18 and 24.
NYS officers play a significant role in training and mentoring servicemen and servicewomen within the service.
NYS servicemen and servicewomen are categorised as uniformed personnel serving on a contract basis. They serve under the three pillars of the NYS and exit the service upon completion of their contractual period.
NYS servicemen and servicewomen receive a monthly stipend and enjoy benefits such as free meals, free monthly personal-issue items and accommodation. Additionally, they receive payments when called upon to perform specific duties, such as election-related assignments, providing security during national examinations and participating in national functions. Some of the recommendations made by the Maraga Taskforce, if implemented, would benefit NYS servicemen and servicewomen. These recommendations include an increase in their monthly stipend, medical cover, and higher mandatory savings contributions compared with the current arrangements.
