Jimmy Wanjigi Says Ruto’s Biggest Challenge Ahead of 2027 Election Is Kenya’s Economy
Safina Party leader Jimmy Wanjigi has argued that Kenya’s economic challenges will play a major role in determining the outcome of the 2027 General Election, warning President William Ruto that voters are increasingly concerned about their financial struggles.
Speaking during an interview on UnFiltered, Wanjigi said Kenya had entered a new political era in which economic emancipation was becoming a central concern for citizens. He suggested that voters were increasingly interested in solutions to their everyday problems rather than political alliances alone.
According to Wanjigi, the coming election will largely be a contest between Ruto and the country’s economic situation. He pointed to concerns surrounding the cost of living, taxation, public debt and employment opportunities as issues that could influence voters’ decisions.
Wanjigi also linked the broad-based political arrangement to the Gen Z protests, which brought renewed attention to governance, accountability and economic grievances.
He further suggested that the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga would not have supported political leaders who failed to address the country’s economic challenges. The remarks reflect Wanjigi’s interpretation of Raila’s political priorities.
As the country approaches the 2027 elections, economic policy is expected to remain an important subject of political debate. Wanjigi’s comments add to growing pressure on presidential aspirants to explain how they intend to improve living standards and create economic opportunities for Kenyans.
