Inside Kenya’s Illicit Alcohol Trade: What “Smartphone” Are You Drinking?
Nairobi County has emerged as a major hotspot for illicit and counterfeit alcohol, according to findings from a multi-agency enforcement operation involving the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA).
The report highlights how counterfeit alcohol has moved beyond hidden, unlicensed outlets and into established bars and popular entertainment spots, raising concerns about consumer safety.
Between August 20 and September 3, multi-agency teams seized more than 5,555 suspected counterfeit bottles and nearly 39,580 litres of illicit alcohol in Nairobi.
The operation also resulted in 36 arrests. Dagoretti North recorded the largest volume of seized illicit brew, accounting for approximately 27,330 litres.
To curb the entry of counterfeit goods into the country, the ACA has introduced the Anti-Counterfeit Integrated Management System (AIMS).
The authority estimates that about 70 per cent of counterfeit products entering Kenya originate from outside the country. The system is intended to help enforcement officers verify imported consignments before they enter the local market.
Consumers are also being urged to take precautions when purchasing alcoholic drinks. One important step is to check the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) excise stamp and, where applicable, verify it using the Soma Label mobile application.
Buyers should also inspect bottles for signs of tampering and suspicious packaging, including spelling mistakes, blurred printing, irregular lettering and poorly attached labels. Broken seals or damaged caps may indicate that a bottle has been opened or refilled.
However, packaging alone cannot guarantee that a drink is safe. Consumers should not rely on taste, smell, bubbles or the speed at which a drink causes intoxication to determine its authenticity.
Counterfeit alcohol may contain dangerous substances, including industrial methanol, which can cause blindness or death.
