“I’ll Vie as Independent Candidate if Denied DCP Ticket,” Nairobi Governor Aspirant Declares

Embakasi North Member of Parliament James Gakuya has declared that he will contest the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial race as an independent candidate if he fails to secure the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) ticket.

Speaking during a television interview on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the lawmaker rejected the possibility of stepping down to accommodate negotiated coalition arrangements or rival aspirants.

Gakuya stated that he had given DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua no pre-conditions regarding the party nomination, emphasizing that his political trajectory allows no room for stepping back in favor of consensus candidates.

Gakuya urged opposition negotiators to restrict coalition talks to the presidential ticket while allowing county-level candidates to compete freely on the ballot. He cautioned that sacrificing local aspirants through backroom deals would disenfranchise voters and destabilize regional party machinery.

The declaration adds a new layer of complexity to the Nairobi political chessboard as key opposition leaders attempt to present a united front against incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja.

Gakuya’s stance comes amidst growing competition from Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who is actively building momentum for his own gubernatorial bid under the Linda Mwananchi movement umbrella.

With recent opinion surveys by Mizani Africa and the Bobea Report showing a tightly contested field involving Owino, Sakaja, business leader Agnes Kagure, and Gakuya, the battle for the capital’s top seat is intensifying.

Gakuya maintained that should party nominations or coalition horse-trading block his path, he will proceed directly to the ballot to let Nairobi residents decide their next governor.
