“I’ll Always Remember the NSFAS Girl”: SA Man Warns After R15k Lands in His Bank Account

A South African man has sparked debate on TikTok after revealing that R15,503.74 unexpectedly landed in his Discovery Bank account. The social media user, known as @njabba2.0, used the experience to warn others against spending money that does not belong to them.

The man shared a video on 21 October 2026, showing a screenshot of a bank notification reflecting the incoming payment, which was dated 20 October 2026. Instead of celebrating the unexpected deposit, he urged people to contact their banks if they found themselves in a similar situation.

His warning reminded some South Africans of the widely discussed NSFAS student funding controversy, with several social media users sharing their thoughts on what they would do if a large sum of money suddenly appeared in their accounts.

In his TikTok video, @njabba2.0 made it clear that people should resist the temptation to spend money deposited into their accounts by mistake.

“If money is not yours, do not touch that money. I don’t care how tempted you are. Don’t you dare touch that money,” he said.

The TikTok user explained that waking up to find R15,503.74 in his account without knowing where it came from had left him feeling stressed.

He advised anyone who received an unexplained deposit to contact their bank, explain the situation and obtain a reference number. According to him, having a record of the communication could help protect them if questions about the money arose later.

The unexpected deposit reminded some social media users of a previous controversy involving a student who received a large sum of money in her bank account.

One TikTok commenter, @mcdonaldkfc7, wrote: “I’ll always remember the NSFAS girl in this moment.”

The reference prompted further discussion about the consequences of spending money received in error.

Another user, @Tumi el-Shasha, shared a personal experience of receiving an unexpected payment and spending it before the bank recovered the funds.

“I got this around 2021, spent that and the bank took it back in instalments over 24 months,” the commenter wrote.

Meanwhile, @Eunatia N expressed surprise at the man’s decision to leave the money untouched, writing:

“Bathong [goodness], you want God to come down and give it to you by hand kanti [really].”

Another commenter, @Mashwabade Nonkosi, took a more carefree approach, saying:

“My bank, my money. I’m chowing this money, I’ll deal with the consequences later.”

The safest course of action is to avoid spending the money, contact the bank through its official channels and keep a record of the communication while the matter is investigated.
