Ibrahim Mahama’s Damang Mine Airport to Cost at Least $80 Million, Manager Reveals

According to a report by JoyNews on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Damang Gold Mine Limited is expected to spend at least US$80 million on the construction of an airport in the Western Region, according to the company’s Community Relations Manager, Ramy Oboro.

Mr Oboro disclosed the estimated cost during a special edition of Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen programme in Tarkwa. He explained that the amount would cover two phases of the project, including land preparation and the construction of the facilities needed to make the airstrip operational.

According to him, the first phase will involve levelling the land to prepare it for the project. The second phase will focus on constructing additional facilities and installing the necessary equipment and electrical systems.

He noted that the project would require several supporting facilities, including a pole for receiving signals and other electrical equipment needed for the airstrip’s operations.

Mr Oboro stressed that the estimated cost of US$80 million was the minimum amount expected to complete both phases of the project. He added that the final cost could rise above the current estimate because of the scale of the work and the infrastructure required.

The planned airport forms part of the infrastructure development expected around the Damang mining community following the takeover of the mine by Engineers and Planners.

Damang Gold Mine, which was previously operated by Gold Fields Ghana Limited, was handed over to Engineers and Planners in April 2026 after the company won a competitive tender for the concession.

The symbolic handover ceremony took place at the mine site on April 18, 2026. The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, supervised the transfer.

The change in management followed the expiration of Gold Fields’ lease, after which the government opened the concession to a competitive tender process supervised by the Minerals Commission.

Ibrahim Mahama, the Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners, has pledged significant infrastructure investments for communities surrounding the mine.

The proposed airport is expected to become an important part of the company’s planned infrastructure development in the area. However, the final cost will depend on the work required to complete the project.
