Former Kaizer Chiefs Star Joins Fourth Division Club

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Siyethemba Sithebe has taken an unexpected turn in his football career after joining a fourth-division amateur side, marking a remarkable change from competing in South Africa’s top-flight league.

Sithebe previously represented Amakhosi after joining the Soweto giants from AmaZulu in July 2022. However, his time at Naturena did not unfold as he would have hoped, with the midfielder struggling to establish himself as a regular starter during his two seasons at the club.

The midfielder made 39 appearances across all competitions for Chiefs before leaving when his contract expired in June 2024. His departure formed part of a major squad shake-up that also saw Keagan Dolly, S’fiso Hlanti and Njabulo Ngcobo leave the club.

Sithebe subsequently joined Richards Bay, returning to KwaZulu-Natal after his spell in Gauteng. His move to the Natal Rich Boyz offered him an opportunity to revive his career and bring his experience to a side competing in the Betway Premiership.

However, his time at Richards Bay also ended prematurely, with the club terminating his contract in December 2024 following a disciplinary matter.

Now, the midfielder’s reported move to the amateur ranks raises questions about the challenges experienced by footballers attempting to rebuild their careers after leaving the professional game.

Sithebe is no stranger to South African football supporters. Before his Chiefs spell, he established himself at AmaZulu, where his performances helped him earn a move to one of the country’s biggest clubs.

His experience in the Premier Soccer League could prove valuable at a lower level, particularly for younger players looking to learn from someone who has competed against some of the country’s best footballers.

Although joining a fourth-division outfit represents a significant change in environment, it also provides an opportunity for Sithebe to continue playing the game he loves.

For a player who once wore the famous gold and black jersey, this latest chapter demonstrates just how unpredictable a football career can be. Whether he can use the move as a platform to revive his fortunes remains to be seen.
