A R40 000 ransom demand sparked a desperate search for a missing Gauteng woman. But what police uncovered took the case in an unexpected direction.

Ntombifuthi Mavis Rumo, 37, appeared in the Kwa-Thema Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 22 October.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) alleges that Rumo conspired with two other people to fake her abduction after experiencing financial difficulties.

The case has been postponed to 29 October.

According to the NPA, Rumo allegedly met Bonginkosi Mndebele, 27, and another person on 7 October to discuss their financial problems.

Prosecutors allege that the three decided to stage her kidnapping and demand money from her family.

Her relatives subsequently received a ransom demand of R40 000.

However, the alleged plan ran into trouble when the family could not afford to pay.

The NPA said Rumo was dropped off along Vlakfontein Road on 12 October, with relatives instructed to collect her.

Police initially investigated the matter as a kidnapping.

However, the investigation later shifted towards an alleged staged abduction.

The court heard that Rumo’s husband brought her to the police on 20 October.

During the investigation, she allegedly identified Mndebele as one of the people involved.

Police subsequently arrested the two suspects.

Rumo and Mndebele face charges of defeating the administration of justice.

A third alleged participant has not been charged.

Mndebele did not appear alongside Rumo on Thursday because he was in hospital.

The Kwa-Thema Magistrates’ Court postponed the case to 29 October for bail investigations and Mndebele’s appearance.

The State intends to oppose bail for both accused.

The court proceedings mark a major turn in a case that initially sparked concern for Rumo’s safety after her family reported her missing and received a ransom demand.
