El-Rufai: When He Was A Sitting Gov, We Lost All Senatorial Seats And Lost Almost All Reps -Basiru
APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru has argued that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s ongoing court battles will not weaken the ruling party’s prospects in Kaduna ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Channels TV, Basiru said, “How do you judge the political foothold of somebody? The only way you can judge is his elections. Even in the presidential election in 2023, we lost Kaduna State when he was a sitting governor. We lost all the senatorial seats. We lost almost all the House of Representatives seats â except about four,” he said.
When asked whether he was effectively describing El-Rufai as a political lightweight, Basiru said, “I don’t want to use that adjective against him â I’m talking facts. Did the APC win the presidential election in Kaduna State when he was a sitting governor? How many House of Representatives seats did we win? How many senatorial positions did we win? Facts are sacred,” he said.
On the question of El-Rufai’s criminal trial, Basiru declined to wade into the specifics, citing professional ethics around commenting on matters before the courts.
He acknowledged, however, that El-Rufai recently lost a fundamental rights application he brought before the court, and that a subsequent appeal was also dismissed just days before the interview.
He called on Nigerians to respect the integrity of the legal process as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democracy.
