Doctor Khumalo Returns to Naturena: The Reason Behind His Visit to Kaizer Motaung

Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has returned to Naturena Village to meet club chairman Dr Kaizer Motaung following his appointment as vice-chairperson of the South African Football Association’s (SAFA) Technical Committee.

The visit has attracted interest among Amakhosi supporters, highlighting the longstanding relationship between Khumalo and the club that played a major role in his football career. The former midfielder remains one of South Africa’s most respected football figures, having contributed significantly to Kaizer Chiefs’ history and the development of the national game.

Khumalo, popularly known as “16V”, is entering a new chapter in his football career after securing a position within SAFA’s technical structures. His visit to Naturena reflects the continued connection between the former player and the institution that helped shape his journey in professional football.

His appointment was confirmed following a meeting of SAFA’s newly elected National Executive Committee in Sandton. Khumalo will serve as deputy to Technical Committee chairperson Jack Maluleke.

The committee plays an important role in South African football, with responsibilities that include evaluating national team performances, supporting coaching development, identifying emerging talent and providing recommendations on national team coaching appointments.

Khumalo brings considerable experience to the position, having worked in several areas of football, including playing, coaching and analysis. His understanding of the game is expected to contribute to discussions about improving the country’s football structures and strengthening the development of future players.

One of the highlights of his playing career came in 1996 when he represented South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana, during their successful Africa Cup of Nations campaign on home soil. That victory remains a landmark achievement in the country’s football history.

Following his appointment, Khumalo expressed appreciation to those who supported him throughout his career. Among the individuals he acknowledged were Motaung, Orlando Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza, SAFA president Danny Jordaan and his family.

He has also indicated that his new position should be viewed as an opportunity to serve South African football rather than a platform for personal recognition.

His return to Naturena therefore represents more than a meeting with the chairman of his former club. It highlights the importance of maintaining relationships with the people and institutions that contribute to the development of football professionals.

As Khumalo begins his new responsibilities at SAFA, attention will turn to how he uses his experience to support coaching programmes, nurture emerging talent and improve the performance of South Africa’s national teams.

For Kaizer Chiefs supporters, his visit is another reminder of the lasting connection between Doctor Khumalo and Amakhosi. His contribution to the club’s history continues to earn him respect, even as he takes on a new role in the administration and development of South African football.
