Do the Maths: Kwesi Botchway Jnr. Links Emelia Agbenyo to Fred Agbenyo

According to a social media post by Kwesi Botchway Jnr., the appointment of Emelia Affi Agbenyo as Deputy Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has triggered fresh debate over political affiliations and the neutrality of the country’s electoral institutions.

Botchway shared a graphic on his official Facebook page comparing the political backgrounds of Emelia Agbenyo and Fred Agbenyo, the Member of Parliament for Guan and a former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Director of Communications.

In the graphic, he described Fred Agbenyo as a “former NDC Director of Communications, now NDC MP, Guan,” while identifying Emelia Agbenyo as a “former NDC Spokesperson on Governance, now Deputy Electoral Commissioner.”

He accompanied the comparison with the brief statement, “Do the maths..”, leaving readers to draw their own conclusions about the possible connection between the two individuals and the implications of Emelia Agbenyo’s appointment.

The post attracted 492 reactions, 242 comments and 20 shares, generating discussions about political affiliations and appointments to independent public institutions.

However, several commenters challenged the suggestion that the two individuals were connected through family ties or political considerations.

One commenter, Bedi Seth Klenam, argued that the two were not related and questioned the reasoning behind the comparison. He stated, “Fred is from Akpafu, while Emilia is from Anlo.”

He further asked, “So, what kind of mathematics are we supposed to do here?”

His response received 30 reactions, indicating that other social media users also questioned the implication of Botchway’s post.

Another commenter, Siegfried Zogli, criticised what he perceived as the motivation behind the criticism of Emelia Agbenyo’s appointment.

“After doing the maths, I realised that it is the hate for the name not the EC,” he wrote.

The exchange reflects differing opinions about whether the criticism centres on concerns about the Electoral Commission’s independence or disagreements arising from the appointee’s political background.

Critics have questioned Emelia Agbenyo’s previous association with the NDC as a governance spokesperson and her reported role as Deputy Director-General of the Ghana TVET Service. They argue that such affiliations raise questions about perceptions of political neutrality.

Conversely, some government supporters have described the criticism as selective, pointing to appointments made during the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

The debate highlights continuing public scrutiny of appointments to Ghana’s electoral institutions. However, the social media exchanges alone do not establish that Emelia Agbenyo’s appointment resulted from political favouritism or that she lacks impartiality.

As discussions continue, attention remains focused on the importance of transparency, institutional independence and public confidence in the Electoral Commission.
