Develop Your Own – Sam George

Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has urged African countries to develop their own digital technologies instead of depending heavily on foreign solutions.

Speaking at Digital Economy Live 2026 at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra, he said Africa must build its technological strength to compete in the global digital economy.

Sam George explained that African countries need digital solutions that reflect their local languages, cultures and development needs.

He said continued dependence on foreign technology could limit the continent’s ability to control and shape its digital future.

The minister called for increased investment in local innovation and the development of skills that would enable African experts to create and manage digital systems.

He also stressed the importance of supporting technology developers who understand the challenges facing African communities and can create solutions to address them.

According to him, Africa must move beyond simply importing technology and focus on building systems that serve its people and support economic development.

Digital technology now plays an important role in business, education, healthcare and government services. Developing local solutions could help African countries address their specific challenges while creating opportunities for technology businesses and skilled workers.

However, achieving this goal will require investment, effective policies and cooperation between governments and the private sector.

Sam George’s remarks have renewed attention on the need for African countries to strengthen their technology industries and reduce their dependence on solutions developed elsewhere.

His message is that Africa must take a more active role in creating the technologies that will shape its future.
