Dangote cement assures drivers of improved welfare, operational efficiency
Dangote cement Plc, has assured its drivers that their complaints will be addressed to enhance operational efficiency, boost productivity and improve their overall welfare.
The Group Head of Transport, Health, Safety and Environment-Pan Africa, including Nigeria, Dangote Industries Limited, Mrs Ebere Okonkwo, disclosed this during the company’s 2026 Drivers’ Safety Retreat held at the Dangote cement company in Obajana, Kogi state.
According to her, the retreat provided an opportunity for management to listen to the drivers’ concerns, document their complaints and explore ways of resolving operational challenges affecting their duties.
Okonkwo explained that the initiative goes beyond issuing safety instructions, noting that it also creates room for open discussions between management and drivers on the challenges confronting them in the course of their duties.
“We have compiled the drivers’ complaints, and the GMD has his copy. We will wade into the complaints for necessary,” she assured.
Mrs Okonkwo described the retreat as an opportunity to reinforce the safety knowledge of drivers through continuous sensitisation, practical engagement and collaboration with relevant external stakeholders.
According to her, although the company regularly organises safety training for its drivers, the retreat provides an additional platform to remind them of the need to translate the lessons learnt into responsible conduct on the road.
“Though we have been training them on safety, the retreat is to further stress the need for them to prioritise safety, which is imperative in their daily activities,” she stated.
She said the company recognises that effective safety management requires not only educating drivers on best practices but also listening to their concerns and addressing operational challenges that could affect their performance.
Okonkwo emphasised that collaboration with external stakeholders remained an important part of the company’s strategy to improve safety awareness and ensure that drivers are adequately equipped to handle the demands of their profession.
She expressed optimism that the retreat would produce a positive change in the attitudes and behaviour of the drivers, urging them to demonstrate greater responsibility and commitment to safe driving practices.
She maintained that safety must not be treated as an occasional exercise or a requirement to be observed only during training sessions, but as a core value that guides every journey and decision made by drivers.
She urged participants to take the lessons from the engagement seriously and ensure that the knowledge acquired translates into safer operations, fewer road accidents and greater protection of human lives.
The Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement Plc, Arvind Pathak in his remarks charged truck drivers of Obajana plant to make safety their top priority, warning that reckless driving and disregard for safety regulations could endanger their lives and those of other road users.
He said the retreat was designed to sensitise and educate drivers on the need to maintain the highest safety standards whenever they are behind the wheel.
The GMD, who expressed delight at participating in the annual exercise, said the initiative was introduced by the late Engineer Joseph Makoju and would be sustained by the company in the interest of drivers’ welfare and road safety.
“I am always glad whenever this type of function takes place in this company because I ensure that I attend to rub minds with you all,” Pathak said.
He described drivers as critical stakeholders in the company’s operations, noting that their responsibility for delivering cement to customers across Nigeria and beyond made their welfare, well-being and safety indispensable to the business.
According to him, Dangote Cement, as the largest cement producer in Nigeria and Africa, places a premium on the quality of its products, while its drivers play a crucial role in ensuring that the products reach customers safely and efficiently.
Pathak acknowledged the challenges drivers encounter in the course of their duties and commended them for their dedication, resilience and commitment to delivering the company’s products despite the difficulties associated with their assignments.
Addressing the participants , the Head of Transport, Dangote Cement, Murilo Silva, cautioned the drivers against reckless driving, proxy driving and other unsafe transportation practices, stressing that such conduct would not be tolerated.
He charged the drivers to take personal responsibility for their actions and contribute to protecting the lives of motorists, passengers and other road users.
As part of the programme, Dangote Cement recognised outstanding personnel for their performance and commitment to safe operations.
Ten drivers received awards for their outstanding contributions, while Ismaila Suleiman was named the Most Performing Driver of the Year 2025.
