Chances of Michael Carrick being sacked as the next Premier League manager increase following Manchester United’s poor performance at Como

October 22, 2026 dailymirror The odds regarding Michael Carrick’s potential firing as Manchester United manager have notably DECREASED following the team’s European disappointment.

On Wednesday night, United faced their second straight defeat in the Champions League, losing 4-1 to Como, a team participating in the tournament for the first time and coached by Cesc Fabregas.

Betfair has adjusted Carrick’s sacking odds from 2-1 to just 17-20.

James Mackie, a representative for Betfair, commented, “Michael Carrick’s tenure as Manchester United manager has taken another troubling turn as his team lost 4-1 to Como, an Italian side, in the Champions League.”

“The Red Devils are currently experiencing a winless streak that has extended to seven matches, and following the drubbing in Italy, Carrick’s odds have shifted to 17/20 from 2/1 to be the next Premier League manager to be let go.

“Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle manager, has emerged as the favorite to replace Carrick at 9-4, while Antonio Conte and Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler share the second-favorite position at 5/1.

“Other names in contention for the Manchester United managerial role include Cesc Fabregas at 11/1, who just oversaw United’s painful 4-1 defeat, along with England’s head coach Thomas Tuchel at 14/1.”

“Questions remain regarding how much longer Michael Carrick can keep his position as Manchester United’s manager…”

The former midfielder from Newcastle criticized his players and personally apologized to the traveling fans who witnessed the disappointing defeat in Como.

Fabregas was asked about the prospect of taking over at United during his pre-match press conference, but he brushed it off as disrespectful.

Fabregas stated, “I won’t respond to that question as I find it lacking in decency.

“I believe it doesn’t show enough respect to an exceptional footballer and manager like Michael Carrick, who leads a remarkable Manchester United team.”
