Black Farmer’s Story of Kindness From Afrikaner Neighbours Captures SA’s

David Lupafya, a black commercial farmer operating outside Potchefstroom, has shared how support from his Afrikaner neighbours helped him sustain his farming business after he struggled to obtain financing from commercial banks.

Lupafya previously worked in the United States’ technology sector, with experience at companies including AT&T, Microsoft and Lockheed Martin, before returning to South Africa to pursue his interest in agriculture.

However, establishing and maintaining his farming operation presented financial challenges. He reportedly struggled to secure the funding required to purchase essential inputs, including seeds, fertiliser and diesel, as well as cover other production expenses.

With limited financing options, Lupafya approached his neighbour, JP Meintjies, who offered to assist by supplying farming inputs and providing machinery for harvesting.

The two reportedly reached an agreement based on trust, with Lupafya expected to repay the costs from the proceeds of the harvest. Any remaining money would go towards his profit. Their arrangement was sealed with a handshake rather than a formal contract, according to the account.

Lupafya also recalled receiving assistance from other neighbouring farmers, who helped with water supplies, diesel, equipment repairs and financial advice over several farming seasons.

He became emotional while describing the support he received, highlighting the importance of cooperation in agriculture.

His experience illustrates how practical partnerships and mutual assistance can help farmers overcome financial difficulties, even amid wider racial and political divisions in South Africa.
