Bauchi Imam Removed for Campaigning for President Tinubu During Sermons
Imam Dahiru Abubakar of a mosque in Madina quarters, Bauchi metropolis, has been removed from his position after repeatedly campaigning for President Bola Ahmed Tinubuâs re-election during sermons.
According to a report by Daily Trust on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the worshippers said Abubakar often used his preaching after obligatory prayers to defend Tinubu, insisting the president was not responsible for Nigeriaâs insecurity and economic hardship.
He was suspended after making similar remarks following the early morning Subhi prayer on Sunday.
A committee was set up to review his conduct after he ignored earlier warnings. âHe would tell the congregation that Tinubu did not cause insecurity and deserved another mandate in 2027,â a source revealed.
Speaking to reporters, Abubakar explained that his sermons emphasized fear of God and urged people not to blame leaders for challenges, which he described as âend times phenomenon.â
He argued that insecurity in countries like Sudan, Chad, and Mali showed the problem was beyond Tinubuâs control.
However, the mosque committee chairman, Imam Abubakar Jibrin, said the issue was not only his political preaching but also his attempt to rename the mosque after Tinubu.
âWe rejected turning the mosque into a political platform. The Quran makes it clear that mosques are solely for worship,â Jibrin stated.
The committee resolved to remove Abubakar permanently, stressing that politics should remain within party offices, not religious spaces.
Jibrin added, âHe should build his own mosque if he wants to campaign. Our prayer is for Allah to choose the best leader for Nigeria.â
