Asiedu Nketia’s Presidential Ambition Gains Attention As He Skips NDC Chairmanship Contest
According to a report by MyJoyOnline on October 22, 2026, speculation about the political future of Johnson Asiedu Nketia has intensified following his decision not to contest the upcoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) national executive elections. The incumbent National Chairman did not pick nomination forms to seek re-election before nominations closed.
The party’s Director of Elections and IT, Mahdi Gibril, confirmed that Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as General Mosquito, had neither picked nomination forms nor indicated an intention to contest the chairmanship position. His decision has drawn attention because of questions surrounding his possible political ambitions ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections.
Although Asiedu Nketia has not formally declared his intention to contest the NDC presidential primary, his previous comments have continued to fuel speculation. He has openly indicated that he has not ruled out seeking the presidency or any other political position.
During an interview in August 2026, Asiedu Nketia was asked whether he had ruled out contesting the 2028 presidential election. He responded emphatically that he had never ruled out any position in his political career. He also described ambition as an important quality for anyone pursuing a career in politics.
Meanwhile, the NDC recorded 137 prospective aspirants who picked nomination forms to contest 14 national executive positions. The positions include National Chairman, National Vice Chairman, General Secretary and Deputy General Secretary, among others.
Former National Chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo is among the prominent figures associated with the contest to succeed Asiedu Nketia. Former Local Government Minister Akwasi Opong-Fosu and Ambassador Alhaji Said Sinare have also been linked to the chairmanship race as the party prepares for its national delegates congress.
Asiedu Nketia’s decision not to contest the chairmanship election has raised questions about his political plans ahead of the 2028 general elections. However, he has not formally declared his intention to contest the NDC presidential primary.
